It might be a little simpler to add the EPEL repository to CentOS instead?
For CentOS 5.3:
rpm -Uvh http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-3.noarc...
The EPEL includes memcached amongst it's packages.
